This past Saturday afternoon, twenty Equality Delaware volunteers gathered at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark to train for their first neighborhood canvass for marriage equality. The group ranged over about seven decades in age, and everyone was fired up to hit the streets and talk to voters about the importance of letting all couples have the freedom to marry in Delaware.
It was a beautiful spring day out – perfect for a first canvass! The team knocked on three hundred doors, and we more than one hundred positive conversations with new supporters of marriage in the suburbs of Newark. The overwhelming response we heard from folks we spoke with was that it’s time all Delaware families had the same protections and recognition that marriage provides. It was great to mobilize our supporters on their front door steps!
We handed over cells phones, so constituents could leave messages for lawmakers on the spot. Many more folks pledged to call or write in the coming weeks. Equality Delaware will be canvassing for marriage equality every Saturday following noon trainings at the UUFN at 420 Willa Rd.
