Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden has joined with 14 other attorney generals in filing legal briefs in support of the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.
The attorneys' first brief argues for an end to Proposition 8, California's ban on marriage for same-sex couples. The second brief, which will be released tomorrow, will challenge the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.
At a press conference this afternoon, Attorney General Biden said:
"Marriage equality is one of the most important civil rights issues of our time. The belief that everyone is equal under the law is at the core of our democracy. That belief, and the equality and the freedom that go along with it, makes America great."
Equality Delaware applauds Attorney General Biden's courageous leadership on the issue of marriage equality. His support will not only positively impact the critical cases that the United States Supreme Court will consider in the coming months; it also propels forward the campaign the win marriage here in Delaware.
In response to Attorney General Biden's incredible leadership, Equality Delaware's Lisa Goodman said:
"This brief that is being filed today makes it very clear that marriage is good for all families. We look forward to the court siding with equality as the Supreme Court almost always has in the past, and we look forward to marriage becoming a reality in Delaware this session in front of our General Assembly."
