Thousands of committed same-sex couples have started families and built their lives here in Delaware -- but they still don't have marriage equality in the state they call home. In 2013, it's time to make history by securing marriage for all loving couples in Delaware.

Sign Equality Delaware's petition now urging the Delaware General Assembly to pass a marriage bill in 2013.

Time for change is now – this is America where all should have equal rights. We are expected to contribute same as our neighbors so give us what we deserve – equal benefits and liberties.

My partner and I have been together for nearly 8 years. Our only legal protection were the wills we put together. We were happy with that for several years but realized over time how little that truly protected us. We relocated to Delaware about 7 months ago and were thrilled that the state offered civil unions and that my job would offer domestic partner health insurance. Though more rights are available, we soon learned the limitations stopped at the borders of Delaware. The domestic partner health insurance, which had been one of several reasons I took the job in Delaware, ended up being much more costly than expected due the federal penalties as this “benefit” is considered imputed income and is therefore taxed (while the heterosexual, married coworker at my office gets the benefit for her spouse without penalty).

After considerable thought, we opted not to enter into a civil union in Delaware. A civil union, we felt, did not make us equal. It grants us the same state rights as marriage, but it is still somehow less. Our relationship is NOT less and we refused to enter into a union that told us it was. We feel that our rights as citizens not only of this state, but also of this country, should be equal to those of our neighbors. I want to know that my “partner”, who in every sense of the word is my “husband”, but who cannot be legally…will be taken care of if anything ever happens to me. The protections granted in civil unions was a good first step but it does not grant equality. Civil unions simply were meant to appease those that fought to deny marriage to homosexuals. In denying us the right to marry, but granting civil unions, Delaware legislated homosexuals couples to a second class. That is, of course, better standing than when we had no standing at all. But it does not make us equal. I want to stand beside my married neighbors, not behind them.

Marriage equality in Delaware is the only way to do this. It obviously won’t solve the federal issues, but it will clearly send a message to those in Washington that this state sees all its citizens as equals. The “First State” must make a stand and that should be on the side of equality.

Marriage is between two people of any race, class, religion, and sexuality and the government should have no say what two people can get married and what two people can not! Homosexual couples should every right that is given to heterosexual couples!

I want my son to have all the opportunities and benefits of having a legal, committed relationship. There is nothing sadder than, later in life, not being able to make medical decisions, or enter your loved one’s hospital room. Live and let live. Love and let love.

I have been with my patner in a committed relationship for 10 years in August. We had a commitment ceremony in 2006 which was lovely and meaningful. But now, 7 years later, I would love to actually get some of the legal rights that my brother and his wife have, or my parents/grandparents/friends and their spouses have. PLEASE pass marriage equality so I can share in equal civil rights with everyone else. I would just like to be protected when one of us is sick or hospitalized, or God forbid, dies. Is that too much to ask??
